In early times this was a favourite spot used by smugglers from the nearby village of Chideock, being the only access to the cliff top along the coast between Charmouth and Seatown. It is a natural gully formed by a small stream and is now accessible by a new flight of wooden steps linking to the coastal footpath to Golden Cap. The original steps were destroyed by landslips a few years ago
